RESPONDING TO SOMEONE WHO IS EXPERIENCING MENTAL ISSUES

HOW TO PROPERLY RESPOND TO SOMEONE WHO STRUGGLES WITH MENTAL CRISIS?
Different people have different perspectives as to how they respond to various circumstances: may it be emotional or physical crisis. People who suffer from mental illnesses may go through an unexpected and invalidated breakdown, such as feeling suicidal or seeing their own or a separate reality. There are a few general techniques you might employ for an effective response:
• Ask their current situation with an open mind.

• Listen without forming assumptions and focus on their immediate needs.

• Avoid invalidating what they feel about their condition.

• Don't make them feel obligated to tell you anything they aren't ready to share.

• Offer to assist them in obtaining expert assistance and provide information on how to properly address their concerns.

Have you known someone who struggles mentally? This is your chance to make them feel that they are loved and never alone. Talk to them now, before it’s too late.
